I have just participated in this year's "CEO Sleepout". This event raises money that goes to Vinnies to help the homeless.
When we see a homeless person, the assumption is that it must have been their own doing. I have recently learnt that the reality is quite different, and every homeless person has had a different journey. Some have been through trauma, physical abuse, mental health issue, some are ex-soldiers, the reasons are varied. A lot of the homeless that Vinnies help are women and children.
I joined 96 other business leaders and slept in a car park on a piece of cardboard with just a sleeping bag and pillow. This gave us an appreciation of what homeless people have to endure every night. Before bedding down for the night, we heard from many people that have had help from Vinnies and their stories where heart-warming but also gut wrenching.
I really appreciate the support from friends, family and work colleagues who helped me raise over $5,000.
